Participants will be using washed, dyed and carded wool along with soapy water to handfelt Rays in their favourite colours. Students will roll wool into a snakelike form before sandwiching it between wide flat layers of fleece, creating markings and felting into one solid piece and trimming to a perfect Ray shape.

A small amount of sewing is involved to attach eyes but the course leader can complete this part for younger participants.

Crafts = Skills For Life...

March - May
Craftspace has been awarded £20’000 from Birmingham City Council to develop a project looking at the relationship between boys and crafts. Boys and Crafts: Skills for Life will raise the question:

“How can making be used to empower and harness boys’ interest or potential, and support their progression into business enterprise, the creative and other related industries?”

Jamie is working with a Year 7 group at Braidwood School for the Deaf with the aim being to create felt based products for a retail environment and contributing to Braidwood's objective of becoming an Enterprise School. See how it's all going on the project blog.

Schools...

Non-woven textiles is part of the National Curriculum and making felt is a fun way to incorporate the subject. Children can learn about the origins of the raw materials and how wool looks before it is spun into it's most recognisable form, yarn, as well as the processes involved in turning the loose fibres into a single piece of durable fabric.

Jamie has worked with small groups of children from Key Stage 1 upwards to create large collaborative felt artworks and small individual pieces. Please contact him for further info or to discuss yuour requirements.

Higher Education...

Jamie offers felt-making instruction for Textile Departments at basic levels or at more advanced levels for students wishing to explore the medium further, perhaps to include a 3D aspect to their work.

Arts/Community Organisations...

Jamie offers workshops, tuition and mentoring services to various arts and community organisations and has experience working with children and adults with learning difficulties.
